The Mysteries of the Rosary

People sometimes think the Rosary is just repetition. But the repeated words are only the melody — the real music is the mysteries, the scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary that we hold in our hearts as we pray.

There are twenty mysteries, gathered into four sets. Each set is like a small pilgrimage through part of the Gospel.

The Joyful Mysteries

Prayed on Mondays and Saturdays — the beginning of the story:

  1. The Annunciation
  2. The Visitation
  3. The Nativity of Jesus
  4. The Presentation in the Temple
  5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

The Luminous Mysteries

Prayed on Thursdays — the years of Jesus' public life, given to us by St. John Paul II:

  1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan
  2. The Wedding at Cana
  3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom
  4. The Transfiguration
  5. The Institution of the Eucharist

The Sorrowful Mysteries

Prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays — the Passion:

  1. The Agony in the Garden
  2. The Scourging at the Pillar
  3. The Crowning with Thorns
  4. The Carrying of the Cross
  5. The Crucifixion

The Glorious Mysteries

Prayed on Sundays and Wednesdays — the victory of Easter and beyond:

  1. The Resurrection
  2. The Ascension
  3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit
  4. The Assumption of Mary
  5. The Coronation of Mary

How to hold a mystery

As you pray the ten Hail Marys of a decade, you do not need to think hard. Simply picture the scene — Mary saying yes to the angel, the light on the mountain, the empty tomb — and let it stay quietly in the background, like a candle burning while you pray.

Over time, the mysteries become old friends. You will find that the beads carry you not just through prayers, but through the whole life of Christ — again and again, until it becomes your own.
