Our Lady of Good Health, Vailankanni
On the sandy coast of Tamil Nadu, in the district of Nagapattinam, stands a great white basilica by the sea. This is Vailankanni — home to Our Lady of Good Health, Arogya Matha — and one of the most beloved Marian shrines in all of India, visited by millions each year.
Pilgrims of every faith walk its sands. It is often, and lovingly, called the Lourdes of the East.
The stories the sea remembers
As the tradition is tenderly told, Our Lady appeared here several times, centuries ago.
A young boy carrying milk to a customer is said to have met a radiant Lady with her Child, who asked for milk for the infant Jesus. When the boy reached his customer and apologised for the missing milk, he found his pot still full — overflowing, in fact — a sign of heaven's gentle abundance.
In another account, a lame boy selling buttermilk met the same Lady, who asked him to tell a gentleman to build a chapel in her honour — and the boy rose up, healed and walking.
Later, so the story goes, Portuguese sailors caught in a violent storm on the sea vowed to build a church if their lives were spared. Delivered safely to this very shore, they kept their promise. From these beginnings grew the shrine we know today.
A place of healing
Vailankanni's name — Our Lady of Good Health — carries the heart of the place. People come to lay their sicknesses, their worries, and their gratitude at Mary's feet. The walls hold countless quiet stories of hope.
The great annual festival falls around the feast of the Nativity of Mary on the 8th of September, when the shrine fills with pilgrims, flags, and prayer.

There is something moving about Our Lady wearing a sari, honoured on Indian soil, drawing Hindu, Christian, and Muslim pilgrims alike to her care. Vailankanni is a reminder that Mary is not a stranger to this land — she is at home here, a mother to all who come.
