October: The Month of the Holy Rosary
Each year, the Church sets aside the whole month of October as the Month of the Holy Rosary. It is a season to take the beads back into our hands — as families, as parishes, and quietly on our own.
The feast of the 7th of October
At the heart of the month is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, celebrated on the 7th of October.
The feast recalls a moment in 1571, when Christian Europe faced a great naval battle at Lepanto. Pope St. Pius V called on the faithful across the continent to pray the Rosary for protection. When the outnumbered fleet won an unexpected victory, the Pope credited it to Our Lady's intercession, and established this feast in her honour.
Whatever we make of the history, the meaning has endured: in the face of things far too big for us, we turn to Mary — and we pray.
A family tradition
There is an old and lovely custom of praying the Rosary together as a family during October — gathered in the evening, beads in hand, working through a decade or the full five. Children learn the rhythm from their parents; grandparents lead in voices worn smooth by a lifetime of Hail Marys.
"The family that prays together stays together." — Venerable Patrick Peyton, the "Rosary Priest"
A gentle invitation
You do not need to do anything elaborate to keep the Month of the Rosary. You might simply:
- Pray one extra decade each day through October
- Keep a rosary by your bed, or in your pocket, as a reminder
- Gather your household for a decade after dinner, even just once a week
Autumn is a season of turning — leaves falling, evenings drawing in. It is a fitting time to turn, too, toward the quiet school of prayer that Mary has always offered us. This October, let the beads lead you home.
This October, take up a handmade rosary and pray a single decade a day.
