How to Pray the Rosary: A Gentle Guide

The Rosary can look complicated from the outside — all those beads, all those prayers. But at its heart it is the simplest thing in the world: a quiet conversation with God, held gently in your hands, with Mary praying beside you.

If you have never prayed it before, here is all you need to begin.

Hold the crucifix

Every Rosary begins at the cross. Holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles' Creed — the ancient summary of the faith.

The opening beads

Just above the crucifix are a single bead, a group of three, and another single bead. On them, pray:

The five decades

The main loop is made of five "decades" — five sets of ten beads. For each decade:

  1. On the single bead, announce the mystery (a moment from the life of Jesus or Mary) and pray an Our Father
  2. On the ten beads, pray a Hail Mary on each, quietly picturing that mystery
  3. Close with a Glory Be

That is the whole rhythm. Our Father, ten Hail Marys, Glory Be — five times around.

Let the beads do the counting

This is the quiet genius of the Rosary: your fingers keep the count, so your mind is free to rest in prayer. You do not have to think about where you are — only who you are with.

"The Rosary is a prayer both so humble and simple, and theologically rich in Biblical content. I beg you to pray it." — St. John Paul II

Begin small

You do not need to pray all five decades to begin. One decade — a single Our Father and ten Hail Marys — is a beautiful place to start. Pray it on the bus, at your kitchen table, or in bed before sleep.

A handmade rosary is made to be held exactly this way: worn smooth by prayer, carried in a pocket, returned to day after day. However you begin, begin gently — and let Mary lead you the rest of the way.

A good handmade rosary makes this gentle daily rhythm a joy to return to.
